Things I Love: Disney Princess Superheroes

Image
More Disney Remix! Artist Isaiah Stephens  re-imagined some of our favourite Disney princesses as ass kicking female superheroes. There's nothing I love more than Disney fan-art so this completely made my day. Above is Mulan as Xena, Warrior Princess (grew up on that show!) and after the jump, you can check out what he did with Princesses Aurora, Snow White, Ariel and Rapunzel. (Hint, Game of Thrones is involved!)  I absolutely adore Disney and I grew up with these princess, but obviously, as a feminist, I recognize how problematic so many of their stories are. I always love seeing them re-imagined as strong, willful women with more autonomy and drive. It's refreshing to be reminded that being a princess doesn't have to mean that you're helpless. Let me know which one is your favourite in the comments below! Continue Reading My Brilliance! >>>

Things I Love: Gender Neutral Disney Princesses

Image
There's almost nothing I like more than a good Disney remix , so naturally I swooned when I saw these. This time around, the lovely princess swap digs with their man friends, making for some really cute menswear approximate looks. My favourite ones so far are Tiana as Naveen (above), Belle as the Beast , Jane as Tarzaan , and Megara as Hercules . They're really great illustrations and a lot of fun. Artist Haruki Godo does a really great job of bringing a more original concept to the Disney fan art genre. Check out the rest of the series on his Deviant Art page.

In Which It's My Own Fault I Haven't Realized My Dreams

Image
So here's the thing: Growing up is really hard. You leave high school around 17-18, then (if you're lucky) you go to college, where you get to feign independence for a few years, and then you're unceremoniously spit out into the real world where you actually have to be  independent, and in all that time, no one ever manages to teach you how to be a real adult. And yet somehow, you're still supposed to figure it out. Because at 21, you are an adult, even though you don't yet feel like it, with all the rights and responsibilities that that allows, and you're expected to act like it. And you know what? One year out of graduation, I can confirm that it is not in fact as simple as it seems. But the thing is, it doesn't matter. I've been back home for almost a year now, nowhere near where I had hoped to be at this stage in my life. I'm not in NY, I don't work at a magazine, I'm not interning for a photographer. I'm not doing what I said I'...

In Which I Had an Arm Cut Off (Metaphorically)

Image
You might have noticed, but I haven't been around lately.... I've been ill, but more significantly, I've been suffering through my own personal version of hell, wherein I have had no access to the internet (or any kind of web enabled device) for days at a time. I feel like a brat for even complaining about it, ( is there a bigger first world problem in existence?) but in this day and age, not being online for extended periods of time is almost  like being forced to clap after you've had an arm cut off. Especially if you're young and broke like me, and trying to find a job.... In any case, I can't yet say when next I'll be online, or when I'll be posting regularly again, but I thought it was prudent to reassure the silent (and possibly non-existent) masses that I am not yet dead. Hopefully I'll have this problem sorted soon, but no promises. In the mean time, please enjoy this lovely little tune that Rihanna apparently released while I was in a tec...

That's so PINteresting! [UPDATED]

Image
via fluid-studio You may (or may not, NBD, I don't judge) have noticed that I have added a pinterest logo to my footer. Never fear, thine eyes have not deceived you, I have in fact joined pinterest. I actually joined a while ago, but refused to use it. I don't think it adds anything to my online experience so far, but I'm still a newbie so we'll see as we go along. In any case, feel free to follow my boards and add me as a friend. Then I won't look so lame! but seriously, can we collectively agree to ignore any other social networks that turn up? UPDATE: I've also added a fun pinterest widget (courtesy of and many thanks to Marie of  Code it Pretty ) to my footer that allows you to hover through my latest pins. I think it's pretty awesome. If you'd like to add it to your own blogger blog, here's the tutorial .

Image
It's the VMA's tonight! Join me, join in, and let's get to bitching about celebrities!

Real Men Swear & Other Things I Love

Image
via Real Men Swear It has happened! I have found my new favourite thing! Combining all the things I love most in this world: fashion, men and swearing (naturally), Real Men Swear  is a brilliant gem in a sea of tumblr mediocrity. If you'd ever thought that profanity elevated fashion , you were right! These amazing f-bomb laced delights are the perfect combination of condescension, hipster culture, and you-just-don't-get-fashion. I especially love the above Sartorialist GIF. If  rumors are to be believed , it might actually ring true! Oh the delight! Oh the schadenfreude!  The reason "bad words" delight me so, is because profanity has a certain ring and inherent character that cannot be replicated with even the most lofty vocabulary. Nothing packs as much punch as the word "fuck". Except maybe the word "cunt". But that is a story for another day entirely. As of now, the blog only runs 7 pages, so naturally I read the entire thing in one sitting, and...

Natalie Dee & Other Things I Love

Image
Okay, so really this post is only about Natalie Dee , but name alone didn't make a very good title out of context. I used one of her comics in my birthday post  last month, and a lovely commenter on Jezebel directed me to the source. I spent a good chunk of time reading through her archives today, and I have to say that I love her. I love her minimal style, I love her sarcastic humor and I love the way she doesn't shy away from making fun of her daughters. I mean, that's a little mean I guess, but she did it first. But honestly, Dee's comics are a delight. They're light and on-their-face hilarious without trying too hard. Check out a few of my favourites from the past year after the jump, and then head on over to Dee's website to see them in all their original glory. Continue Reading My Brilliance! >>>

Feminism: The BAMF Girls' Club

Don't you want to be part of the BAMF Girls' Club?  I love the idea of bringing all these awesomely amazing ladies together (and Bella) and seeing what kind of mischief they get into!

Nike Voices Celebrates Title XI: Women in Sports

Image
I found this video on the Marie Claire website a little while ago, and I just had to drop everything and post about it. To celebrate the 40 years since title XI was passed, ( a law that calls for gender equality in sports) Nike created a short film showcasing Olympians  Joan Benoit Samuelson, Lisa Leslie, Marlen Esparza, and Diana Taurasi. It's so sweet and poignant that I was on the verge of tears. Although, to be fair, it doesn't take a whole lot these days. But it's beautiful to see women taking charge and forcing paths in places that were once not accepting of their presence. It was beautiful to see these women, trailblazers, interlaced with images of young women, gearing up to continue the tradition of women in sports.  But what really touched me was a quote around 0:36:  "I didn't set out to dominate. I just did."   I love that attitude, and I hope that more women align themselves with this kind of thinking, no matter what their field of choice ...

Happy Birthday! Kinda?

Image
It's my birthday!  I'm 22! I'm an adult and I can drink! I'm an adult and I have to pay taxes... I'm an adult and I have to find a job so I can pay taxes... via somecards.com Never mind. This isn't fun anymore. But  anyway ... sob stories aside, it is my birthday today and I'm grateful that I've made it through another year. I'm not so grateful that I have class on my birthday and that instead of going out drinking and/or stuffing my face with cake surrounded by my nearest and dearest I will spend tonight studying for a quiz. Yay? via quickmeme.com ugh, omg THIS. But as it turns out, my aunt and I have the same birthday, and I never even knew! (Not a biological aunt. Long story...) Oddly enough it does make things a little more fun. :) Although I'm not quite here yet: via shesonehotmama.blogspot.com I AM feeling a little bitter that I'm not at home (in Trinidad) for my birthday. This is the first time that's happened since my family moved...

#4: be more beautiful

Image
via inkblot*photography this is my fourth tattoo. i had it done mirrored under my left collar bone, so it looks like gibberish unless you look at it in a mirror. i liked the idea of it being an open secret that i had. everyone can see it, but only i can understand it. after all, very few people will see my bare shoulders. (yes, i'm a prude) i had it done on monday 19th as a reward to myself for getting through the first half of my senior year. i'd been thinking about it for a while, and i'm glad that i got it done.  do you guys have any tattoo? what do they mean to you?
