NaNoWriMo: Surprise! I'm Writing A Novel

Image
Here's some random but also awesome news: I've decided to participate in National Novel Writing Month  and write my first novel! Completely left field I know, but I've always wanted to write a novel, and what better time to start than now? I've always been a huge reader. When I was in primary school, my teacher called my parents in because she kept catching me reading story books under that desk during class. What can I say? Math was boring. Roald Dahl was not. Books and the stories within them have always been a huge part of my life and to this day, I always have a book on hand in my handbag for unexpected downtime. I honestly think I've read upwards of two thousand books in my lifetime, and that's not counting the ones I keep going back to because I love them. Writing a book of my own has always been something I wanted to do, mostly just to be able to say that I did it, but I don't have the discipline to start and finish a project like that on my own unfor...

I Now Declare Myself A BAMF Because, Final Cut Pro.

Image
I very rarely toot my own horn, but I have declared myself a BAMF today, in honour of this (not quite, but still...) momentous occasion! I kid, but seriously. It took me 3 hours, but I've finaly gotten the hang of FCPX, and if you know me, then you know that's cause for celebration. I didn't expect to, but I really enjoyed doing multimedia work when I was in college, and I had always planned to continue when I got home. But then my computer died, and I was broke, and you know how that story goes... But earlier this week, a year later, I finally  got a brand new MacBook, and I spent three days getting all the software I needed to work on my multimedia pieces. Naturally, this is Apple we're talking about so a year later, Final Cut Pro looks nothing like it did when I learnt on it, so I had to relearn the essentials. It took me hours last night, but I finally figured it out, and I AM SO PUMPED. So many ideas! As a warmup, I'm putting together a short piece from some c...

Here Is A Thing That Happened: My Photo Made It On The Front Page!

Image
You will have to take my word for it because this front page image is terrible and you can't read the caption, but MY PICTURE MADE IT ON THE FRONT PAGE TODAY! *runs around in circles screaming in excitement* Finally. Something is going well this month. I literally spent 2 hours (LITERALLY literally, not figuratively literally) walking around Port-of-Spain covering this story, so it feels good to have my work pay off. Woohoo! It was pretty cool too. A cement truck caught an overhead wire and pulled down three electricity poles and bent another, and the three poles fell on three separate cars because MURPHY'S LAW. Ah well. At least no one was seriously injured.

Here Is A Thing That Happened: My Birthday Sucked

via mydamnchannel I don't want to talk about it.  I'd much rather obliquely solicit pity on the internet. As is my right. Poo.

Confession: I Got Fired From My First "Real" Job. Here's How That's Working Out For Me.

I got fired from my job as a copywriter two weeks ago today. After six months of working my ass off at an advertising agency, I was told that maybe the work just "wasn't for me." I'm not even sure that I disagree. I'm confident in my writing ability, and I'm great with ideas, but creative writing is not my thing. I write about real issues, in the real world, that I'm passionate about. Pulling headlines from mid-air has never been what I do. And yet, I'd be lying if I said it didn't sting to be told I wasn't good enough. It hurt to feel like I had failed where I had been so determined to excel. Because the thing is, I liked my job. A lot. I legitmately loved going there everyday and I loved the work I did, and the people I worked with. I'm genuinely upset to not be working there anymore. Landing the job in the first place was a coup. I wasn't qualified. Not really. But I was passionate, and eager and willing to learn, so they let me take...

The Very Best: My Fictional Female SuperHeroes

Image
If I could be my best self, there are a lot of things I'd do differently. There are a ton of bad habits I would break, and some better ones I'd pick up. I have a lot of goals for myself in the long term, but as an early twenty-something, I'd much rather find myself in the fictional television characters I love. I mean, their lives are exciting enough that they're on TV, so why shouldn't I want to be like them? I kid of course! I know that they are all fictional people, but that doesn't change the fact that there have been a lot of brilliantly flawed fictional, female characters over the years.  If I could be anyone in the world, I'd choose to be equal parts of each of these fantastic fictional ladies: Ugly Betty: Betty; one of the characters I most identify with; is a sweet, hardworking, ambitious girl, trying hard to make it in an industry that doesn't want her, and doesn't think she's worth their time. But despite their poor treatment, Betty pe...

Random: Dumb Ways to Die

You've probably all seen this already, but I just had to share it! I didn't think there was a way to make death both depressingly morbid and amazingly adorable, but they did it! You'll be singing the song all day. :)

Random: BattyMamzelle on Instagram

Image
You may have heard, but the new online Instagram profiles are here. The layout is simple, but effective, and functions much the same way that it does on your smartphone. It's very basic, and is mostly a way to view your Instagram pictures online rather than to engage in the Instagram community the way you can in mobile format. I'd like to see an option to search for users come in future (unless it's already there and I've somehow missed it) and the ability to browse your newsfeed, but for now, it suffices. If you're on Instagram, connect with me! I only recently joined, but I'm loving it so far. My username is BattyMamzelle  (predictably) and I'm having a lot of fun sussing out the different ways that people are using Instagram to share their lives.
