You will have to take my word for it because this front page image is terrible and you can't read the caption, but MY PICTURE MADE IT ON THE FRONT PAGE TODAY! *runs around in circles screaming in excitement* Finally. Something is going well this month. I literally spent 2 hours (LITERALLY literally, not figuratively literally) walking around Port-of-Spain covering this story, so it feels good to have my work pay off. Woohoo! It was pretty cool too. A cement truck caught an overhead wire and pulled down three electricity poles and bent another, and the three poles fell on three separate cars because MURPHY'S LAW. Ah well. At least no one was seriously injured.

Look at me! doing important JOURNALISM things. (in my PJ's. Natch) Last semester I took this awesome class called multimedia journalism that was basically about learning how to use Final Cut to create multimedia presentations around our stories. I've been meaning to post these for AGES now but in the flurry of final projects and exams, I never got around to it. So... TA DA! I can do Final Cut things now. I guess... Maya Jimnenz: A Profile This was the first assignment. We had to pair up and produce a profile of our classmate, answering the question "Why do you want to be a photojournalist?". I had a lot of fun shooting and producing it, and it turned out that Maya and I had a lot in common. It was a great assignment and I'm really proud of the results. via PLola Photo #41: Chinatown For one my classes I have to create a multimedia snapshot of Boston's Chinatown district. It was fun to shoot there, but the attitudes of the locals ranged from vaguely racist to super nice. It was a frustrating endeavor to say the least.

via PLola Photo #3: Kids of Occupy This little tyke was soaking things in at the Audre Lorde to Howard Zinn Library at the Occupy Boston camp. His parents had brought him and his older sister down to try to explain to them what the movement was about and why it mattered. Awesome parents are awesome. Seriously, I think it's so important for parents to teach their kids to be aware and inquisitive and to care about the world around them. If everyone did that we could make assholes extinct in 20 years. In any case, what I remember most about Tyler is that when I asked him if he understood what was happening, he couldn't articulate what he meant. It's one of those frustrating moments of childhood where you know what you mean, but you haven't yet learned the words you need to articulate the sentiment. It was cute, but it made me feel good that at 12, he had an opinion in the first place. Like I said, awesome parents are awesome.

  via PLola Photo #2: The 99% This is a photo of a couple who was occupying full time at Dewey Square during the height of the Occupy Movement. I interviewed them for a class assignment and there story was so moving. Being down at the occupy camp really made me aware of just how difficult life was becoming for ordinary American citizens. How can it be the land of the free when there are so many people who can't even afford to maintain the lives they've been building for 50+ years? It's made me pay attention to the politics of things, and I've been getting rather worked up about the election process this year even though I don't get a vote.... But vote aside, it's so important to be aware of the issues, and to know how they affect the people around you. There's so much inequality, and it really opens your eyes when you first experience how deep the rift between the rich and the poor really is.
